How to Build a Custom Website with WordPress in 2 Hours

I have a pretty unique story. I started my professional career in the tech industry, moving between different roles for the best part of a decade. I’ve been building sites since the early days of WordPress, using my own custom build of the blogging platform. It was only a matter of time before I put everything I knew about web design into practice and started my own agency, Bitfolk. I specialize in creating fully custom websites, using the WordPress platform. Not only do I enjoy creating unique websites for my corporate clients, but I’ve also got a healthy amount of fun personal projects on the go as well.

WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems (CMS) around. It’s free and open-source software that powers millions of websites across the world. It’s extremely flexible, allowing anyone to build their perfect website without need for any specialized coding knowledge. That said, it doesn’t come with pre-installed themes to use, so you’ll need to find a way to bring your website to life. And that’s where this tutorial series comes in; I’m going to show you how to build a custom WordPress website in no time at all.

Find a Domain

You’ll need a domain name for your website. You can find cheap and reliable hosting packages from any reputable web host, like Bluehost, that specialize in WordPress hosting. Domain names are like telephone numbers for websites. They identify your site uniquely on the web, acting as a contact point for visitors. Finding the perfect domain name for your website is not an easy task and can take some time. Once you’ve found it, you’ll need to ensure that it is both easy to spell and pronounce and that it suits your brand. You should also consider whether or not you want your website to be free to access, or if you’d prefer to charge for it. As a general rule of thumb, it is best to choose a.com or.net domain. Avoid choosing a.org or.io domain, as these are usually reserved for non-profit organizations and charities. Finally, look into registering your domain name with Google Domains. This will ensure that your domain is always accessible through searches.

Install WordPress

Now that you’ve got your domain name, you can proceed to install WordPress. This will install a copy of the software onto your web server. You can use a free tool like WordPress Installer to make the process of getting WordPress up and running on your server much easier. Just follow the prompts to install the WordPress application. Once you’ve installed WordPress, you’ll see a big green button named Hello World! on your screen. You can click this to take you to your site’s dashboard, where you can access all of the built-in features of WordPress. You can also use this button to login to your website and access your dashboard.

Create Your First Post

Now that you’re in your WordPress dashboard, you can start to build your blog post list. You’ll want to add several content blocks to your website’s homepage, each containing a sample post. To add a new post to your blog, head to Writing on the dashboard. Once you’re there, you can click on the Add New button to get started. From here, you can select the type of content you want to write from a drop-down menu. Once you’ve made your selection, click on Publish. Your post will then be published to your site and users can start to comment on your content. You can also click on the Edit button to make any necessary changes to your blog post before publishing it.

Customize Your WordPress Theme

One of the advantages of using WordPress is that it comes with a large selection of free themes that can be installed onto your site. These themes are completely customizeable via CSS, allowing you to change the colors and layout of your site to fit your needs. However, since these are free themes, your site’s design may not be as professional as you’d like it to be. Fortunately, you can download premium themes from WordPress themes directories, like Themeforest, that offer a much higher level of customization.

Make Your Blog Visible To Readers

You’ll want your blog to be as visible as possible to readers, so make sure that you promote it often on social media channels. This is how people discover new things nowadays, via social media channels such as Twitter and Instagram. If you’ve got a blog that you think is worthy of being discovered, take a look at the numbers involved in discovering it. For example, one study performed by the UK’s University of Cambridge found that 65% of web traffic comes from social media channels. And according to HubSpot Blogs’ research, 93% of consumers have browsed or searched for products or services online before buying them. If you’d like to increase the likelihood of your blog being discovered, use keywords in the titles and content of your posts. And don’t forget to claim your blog on social media channels for the greatest impact.

SEO For Bloggers

If you’re looking to take your blog somewhere beyond the reach of your readers, consider hiring a professional SEO company to take care of all the technical stuff for you. Many of these companies specialize in getting blogs and websites to show up in search engine results for relevant keywords. They’ll run keyword searches for you, find the best performing keywords, and make adjustments to your content and coding to get you the best results possible. Just make sure you’re aware of any potential drawbacks before signing up for any kind of SEO campaign; you could lose a little bit of traffic if your website starts to appear irrelevant in the search engine results.
