Displaying Latest WordPress Post on Website

WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS) used today. As such, a lot of the built-in features of WordPress can be customized and used for different applications. This tutorial will teach you how to display the latest post from your WordPress website on your own phone, tablet or laptop web browser.

The Basics

Before you begin coding, it’s important to understand what you’re working with. In this case, you have a standard WordPress installation with the sample website theme (TwentyFourteen) activated. You’ll also need to have Google’s Chrome web browser. If you don’t already have a Google account, you can create one now.

The WordPress toolbar will be visible on the far right side of the browser. It contains common settings and shortcuts for WordPress, such as Post, New and Edit (for editing existing posts).

When you’re on a WordPress-powered site, you’ll see Post buttons at the top of the browser window. Clicking on these buttons will display the post’s contents on a new page.

Additional Settings

WordPress has a lot of settings that can be configured to fit your needs. In addition to the basics discussed above, you’ll need to know how to access and use these settings. While there are a lot of them, it’s not easy to remember all the options. Luckily, WordPress comes with great built-in help pages. If you ever need to find out anything about a specific setting, you can use the search bar at the top of the help pages to search for an answer.

For example, let’s say you want to display post excerpts on your site. To do this, you would enter the search phrase excerpt in the search bar and press enter. This will bring up a list of all the settings related to excerpts. Clicking on any of the settings will display a small help box with more information about that setting.

As you learn more about WordPress, you’ll find that there are a lot of settings that can be configured to fit your unique situation. It may take some time to discover what works best for you.

Adding New Content To Your Site

Once you have a basic understanding of how WordPress works, adding content to your site is fairly simple. You’ll start by creating a new post. When you click on the New button at the top of the browser window, a blank page will appear with a Post heading. Type your post’s content into the body of the page and press enter to publish your post.

WordPress uses a standard article format. Each article is composed of six to twelve paragraphs. A typical article may have three to four H1 (heading level 1) tags. A H2 tag is used for secondary headings and an H3 tag for tertiary headings. The article will also contain Title, Annotations, Content and Keywords.

When you click on the Preview button, you’ll be taken to the post’s preview page. This is similar to the post’s published page, but with a few key differences. The most obvious is the Preview button itself. Also, the preview page will only show you the first paragraph of the article. This is so you can get a feel for how the article will read before you hit the Publish button.

WordPress has a built-in Reading list. This is a great way to stay abreast of what’s trending on the web without having to constantly check a specific blog or website. To access the Reading list, click on the Menu button at the top of the browser window (this is the button with three horizontal lines). From the Menu drop-down, select Reading. A list of the top trending news stories will be displayed.

Linking And Adding New Sources Of Content

One of the great things about WordPress is that it’s fairly easy to link to other websites and blogs. To add a link, simply use the Edit button to go to the post’s page. When you’re on the post’s page, there will be a section to the right of the article with the Edit button and an Insert button. Simply click on the Insert button and a small window will pop up with all the available website and blog links.

When a visitor clicks on a link in your article, they will be taken to the website or blog that you linked to. WordPress makes it easy to create links to different sites and blogs by automatically including blogger, wordpress, com and net in the link. You don’t need to worry about manually coding these links.

For example, let’s say you wrote an article about fashion trends for women. You’ll want to include a link to a reputable fashion blog that’s written clearly and uses good styling. You can find these links by selecting Link from the Edit drop-down menu, then pressing enter.

Now that you’ve got a basic understanding of how to add content to your site, it’s time to move on to displaying that content. In the next section, you’ll learn how to display a list of your latest blog posts on your website.

Displaying Blog Posts On Your Website

One of the first things you’ll want to do after adding content to your site is to display the posts in a manner that makes sense for your website’s design aesthetic. You can do this by navigating to Appearance from the WordPress dashboard and adjusting the settings as needed.

The primary setting you’ll want to adjust is the Reading function. To access Reading, click on the Menu button at the top of the browser window and select Settings. From here you can change the Reading settings as needed. Another option is to create your own Reading List by going to Reading and checking the Add to Reading List option. This will add any article to a list of articles you’ve previously read. This makes it easy to reference back to previous articles when needed.

Now when you’re on one of your website’s articles, you’ll see a Bookmark button at the top of the browser. This will allow you to save the article for later. To save an article for later, simply click on the Bookmark button. This will add the article to your Favorites section (which can be accessed from the Menu button’s Favorites drop-down menu).

The last step before you publish your article is to preview it. Clicking on the Preview button will display your article with some basic formatting. Once you’re satisfied with the appearance of your article, simply click on the Publish button.

Once you’ve published your article, it’ll be available in your Archives section (which can be accessed from the Menu button’s Archives drop-down menu). The Archives section is where you’ll want to check for previous articles published on your website. If you ever run into trouble with a previous article, it’s simple to find and read it in your Archives section.

Customizing The List Of Blog Posts

If you’re using WordPress as a blogging platform, you’ll want to display your latest blog posts on your site in a way that makes sense for your blog design. To do this, you’ll need to customize the blog post list on your website’s Appearance page.

The settings you’ll want to adjust are found in the List section of Settings. As its name implies, this set of settings controls how your blog posts will be displayed.
