You wake up one day and decide you want to add a calendar widget to your WordPress website. So you fire up Notepaddsy, the most popular WordPress calendaring tool, and start customizing.

That’s when you realize that adding a calendar to your website is a lot more complicated than you thought it would be. In this article, we’ll discuss how to add a calendar to a WordPress website so you can get started building your perfect little blog or business website.

What Is a WordPress Website?

If you’re reading this article, I assume you’re either a) thinking about adding a calendar to your WordPress website or b) are already using one and need help figuring out how to properly display and manage your events.

A WordPress website is a website optimized for WordPress. That means all of the content is structured in a way that makes it easy for your readers to find what they’re looking for and easy for search engines to find and rank your content.

WordPress offers a variety of free and paid-for solutions to make adding a blog or a business page easy. You can use the free version to test out the product and see how it works before you invest in a paid plan. All you need to do to get started with a WordPress website is [launchpad](https://launchpad.blog) or [squidoo](https://squidoo.com).

Why Add a Calendar to Your Website?

Blogs and websites are a great way to keep track of events, whether you’re a business owner looking to keep up with the latest news or a brand trying to stay informed about topical issues.

Adding a calendar to your blog or website lets users see what’s happening around the world and lets you easily incorporate blog posts, videos, and images into your schedule. Plus, if you decide to use a paid version of WordPress, you can install a premium plug-in that gives you even more features, like integrating with external services and adding team members and collaborators to the mix.

Of course, not everyone needs or wants a full-blown blog or business website to run their daily lives. If you have a fairly simple site that just needs a space to house your content, you can use a [static page](https://wordpress.com/blog/2018/03/15/why-everyone-should-have-a-blog/) or a simple [blog directory](https://wordpress.com/blog/add-a-blog/) to keep track of your posts.

How Do I Add A Calendar To My Website?

To add a calendar to your WordPress website, you need to do the following:

  • Install the [Calendar Webapp](https://calendar.google.com/) plug-in from Google.
  • Navigate to the Calendar Webapp in your Google dashboard.
  • Click the red plus sign in the top right corner to add a new event.
  • Type in the event name and the date in the right boxes.
  • Select your time zone in the dropdown menu.
  • Click the Save button.

When you add a new Google Event, it will appear in your webapp calendar alongside any other calendars you might have (like your phone or your email).

Now that you have a Google Event, you can easily bring it into your WordPress site. If you use the [Simple CKEditor](https://wordpress.com/add-a-blog/docs/editing-posts/simple-ckeditor) WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, just follow these steps:

  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  • Click on the Add A Blog button in the upper left corner.
  • Click on the + icon to start a new post.
  • In the editor, enter the event information (including the date and location) and hit enter.
  • Type a few words about the event in the space below.
  • Click on the Publish button to publish your post.

As your post goes live, you can click the eye icon in the upper right corner to lock the post for editing.

Now that you have a blog post with a calendar event in it, you can add a shortcode to the post to display it on any page or post in your WordPress site. For example, you can add [calendar] to the

Heading

in your post to display the calendar.

How Do I Use My Google Calendar On My Website?

Now that you have a Google Event on your website, you can use it just as you would use any other event on your Google calendar. Just follow these steps:

  • Log in to your Google Calendar.
  • Click the arrow on the right side of the calendar to bring up your events.
  • Click the red plus sign in the top right corner to add a new event.
  • Type in the event name and the date in the right boxes.
  • Select your time zone in the dropdown menu.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Now you can select the events you want to display on your website from your Google calendar.

Why Is Integrating With Google Important?

There are a number of reasons why integrating with Google is important, but let’s start with the most basic one: people love simplicity. If you want to add something new to your website, you have to ask yourself, “How easy is it to use?”

When you integrate with Google, you’re not only giving them space on your website to display events, you’re also giving them a reason to show up every day. When you put something in their pocket, they have an incentive to interact with you and increase your exposure.

Adding Guests To Your Calendar

You can also add guests to your calendar by following these steps:

  • From your Google Event, click the gear icon on the right side and select Edit attendees.
  • Add the email addresses of the people you want to invite.
  • Click the Save button to add the attendees to your calendar.

This is an important feature, because sometimes you need help with projects and want to bring in specialists to lend a hand. Alternatively, you might want to invite someone to an event who lives in a different time zone and can help out with the logistics. Adding guests is a great way to expand your networks and get more out of life.

Managing Your Events

Google Calendar gives you all the basics, like creating and editing events, but beyond that, you have to take care of things yourself. That’s why we loved it so much when we first added it to our website and then used it as our primary calendar. It was so much simpler to keep track of everything ourselves.

As the name suggests, WordPress offers some pretty robust features for managing your calendar. You can create as many different views of your calendar as you need, from a monthly to a yearly view so you can easily find what you’re looking for. You can create separate dashboards for different purposes, like viewing upcoming events or browsing through your past events. Creating event reminders and setting them to go off automatically is also super easy.
