How to Change Website Preview Image in WordPress?

You want to redesign your website but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, here’s the step-by-step guide on how to change the preview image in WordPress.

Change The Image In The HTML

The first step is to change the image in the HTML (e-mail).

Go to the Settings area in your WordPress dashboard, and look for the Reading menu. Click on it and you’ll see a list of all the posts and pages on your site. In each post or page, you’ll see the Preview image at the top right of the screen. You can change this image to any other image in your site’s Media library or to an Event thumbnail (for external links).

If you decide to go with an Event thumbnail, make sure that its dimensions are suitable for the container (e.g., Post or Page) in which it will be displayed. Thumbnail images display at 150 pixels wide by 200 pixels high.

Upload New Image To The Media Library

After you’ve changed the Preview image in the HTML (e-mail), you need to upload the new image to your Media library. To do this, navigate to Media in your WordPress dashboard, and click on the Add New button.

You’ll see a pop-up window with a list of different photo sizes and orientations. For the sake of this tutorial, we’ll stick with the largest size and highest quality as our new_image.

Repeat the process for the remaining images in your Media library. When you’re done, you can click on the Update button to save the changes.

Change The Image In The CSS

Like the HTML (e-mail), the CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) of your website can be changed to give it a new look. A CSS is a type of template you can use to format your website’s text, headings, and links.

To change the Preview image in CSS, go to Style in your WordPress dashboard, then click on the Writing tab. You’ll see a list of all the posts and pages on your site. In each post or page, you’ll see the Style and Layout (the text and sidebar arrangement) at the top right of the screen. Above the Preview image, you’ll see four Heading levels. For the sake of this tutorial, we’ll use the two highest levels, H1-H2, to format our text.

Find the text you want to change, then hover your mouse over it and you’ll see a pop-up tool tip with the Current text and Suggested text. Click on the Current text to change it to the Suggested text.

In the same way you changed the Preview image in the HTML, you need to change the Style and Layout related to this image in your CSS. Don’t worry, it’s very simple. When you’re done, you can click on the Update button to save the changes.

Change The Image In The RSS

If you use the popular RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to distribute content to other websites and social media channels, you can decide how they will display your content using a RSS feed. You can put an image in your RSS feed that will be displayed on other websites and social media channels. Just remember that the image will be enlarged to fit the size of the container.

To add an image to your RSS feed, go to Settings in your WordPress dashboard and look for the RSS button. Click on it and you’ll see a pop-up window with a New button. Click on this button to add the Event thumbnail (from step 2) to your RSS feed.

Now that you’ve added the image to your RSS feed, you can change the Layout, Color scheme, and Background image for the entire RSS feed. Remember, the image will be enlarged to fit the size of the container.
