How to Convert WordPress Website to Mobile App
This will be a short tutorial on how to create a mobile app for your WordPress website. It will cover the basics of getting started, setting up your mobile backend, and connecting your web app to a WordPress database. You can then use a tool like Flow to build out your whole product and get testing in no time!
Why Build a Mobile App For Your Website?
You already have a website. Why would you want to build a mobile app for it when you can just use the web? The main reason is that not everyone has a laptop or a desktop computer nearby when they want to access the web. Thanks to the rapid rise of mobile phones and wireless technology, everyone has a browser in the palm of their hands. You can put a website on the web and have it reach anyone, anywhere at anytime. But with a native app, you can make your content truly accessible to anyone on the go. Not to mention the fact that everyone wants to be able to access and use content on the go. Especially content that’s relevant to them wherever they go.
How Do I Convert My Website To A Mobile App?
Now that you’re already reading this article, I assume you have a pretty good idea of what you need to do. If not, feel free to follow the steps below. There will be a quick tutorial at the end of the article on how to get started with Flow.
The first thing you’re going to need to do is set up a new website for your mobile app. This can be done through a service like WordPress or SquareSpace. Once you have your own web space, you can start setting up the basic structure of the site. Make sure to use a content management system like WordPress to maintain the ease of use for developers and designers down the road. When you’ve got content down, it’s time to start thinking about the UI/UX of your app. The best way to do this is through user testing. By having real users test out your app, you can pinpoint the areas that need some improvement before you start pitching to investors.
Once you’ve got that user testing stage out of the way, you can move on to development. It’s time to write some code!
What Is A Mobile Backend?
While it’s great to have a mobile app to access content, you have to remember that all apps are digital products. This means that they require a server to run on. There’s no physical product to distribute to users. But with a website, you have an actual product that you can ship to users. This product is actually referred to as the mobile backend. So essentially, a mobile backend is the tools that allow you to serve content to users from a server.
What Is A Content Management System (CMS)?
A content management system is a tool that allows you to easily create and maintain websites without needing to be a developer. Some examples of CMSs are WordPress, Joomla, and Squarespace. These are some of the most popular platforms for creating and maintaining websites. Once you’ve created your website using a content management system, you can start thinking about connecting your app to the site. This will allow you to use the power of the existing website to develop and launch your app.
How Do I Connect My App To A WordPress Database?
This is a fairly technical step and requires a little bit of knowledge of MySQL. Once you’ve got WordPress up and running on your web space, it’s time to start thinking about connecting your app to the database. To do this, you will need to create a new database for your website. You can use whatever database management tool you’d like for this step, but it really depends on your comfort level. Most backend developers should be able to handle this with ease. Be sure to not use any of the database tools that are part of WordPress since these will already be in use on your website’s backend. Once you’ve got the database up and running, you can move on to the next step.
That’s it! You now have a fully functional WordPress website with a MySQL database attached to it. As a final step, it’s time to test out your app. To do this, you will need to download the Google Play Store App. Then, from the menu, click Open. Once you’ve opened the Play Store, search for Flow. Then click on the Flow icon to see the detail page for the app. From here, you can click on the install button to begin the installation process. When the installation is complete, you can click on the menu icon in the top right corner to see your app. You can now use this app to test out your WordPress website on the go.
Creating a Mobile App Using WordPress
WordPress makes it pretty easy to build a mobile app. All you need is a bit of creativity, and an iPhone or Android phone. If you’re following along, you’ve already got all the essentials. Now it’s time to get creative!
To start, login to your WordPress dashboard through their website or the Google Play Store App. Then, from the widget menu, click on Apps. Here, you will see a list of all the apps that are installed on your phone. From here, you can click on the WordPress icon to see the details for their blogging platform. As you can see, there’s a tabbed section at the top of the page. This is where you’ll spend most of your time when building out your app. As a first step, you’ll want to create a new section for your app. Give it a title and some content to get started. When you’ve got that done, it’s time to move on to the next step.
From the widget menu, click on Apps again. This time, instead of installing more apps, click on the icon that looks like a keyboard. This will take you to their website’s backend. When you’re there, click on Settings in the top right corner. In here, you’ll see a tabbed menu. Click on the General tab to get started. Here, you’ll want to click on the WordPress icon to log in to their dashboard. When you’ve logged in, you’ll see a panel at the top that’s filled with menus. The one you want to focus on is the “Connected Apps” menu. Here, you can see the list of all the apps that are connected to your WordPress site. Simply click on the one you want to connect to your app.
Once you’ve connected the app, you can start building out the rest of the interface for your app. To save time, use their pre-made buttons, inputs, etc. To create your own unique look and feel for the app, it’s time to get creative. There are many different design templates that you can choose from. Simply click on the one you like and start editing.
Editing The Template
WordPress makes it pretty easy to edit the templates for their blog posts. Simply click on the ellipsis located at the top of a blog post to see the post’s template. This is the barebones of a WordPress blog post. From here, you can start making changes. For example, you can add a heading to the top of the post. Or you can add a section before the main content area. When you’re ready, click on the Publish button in the top right corner of the template to publish it. You can now start using the template to build out your blog posts!
Once you’ve started using the template, you can click on the word “Blog” located at the top right corner of the template to see a drop-down menu. Click on this menu to see all the options available for you to edit. Be sure to check out the documentation for each option to see what they are and how they work. This way, you’ll be prepared for the minute you need to edit a post.
Adding A Navigation Menu
Navigation menus are extremely useful for websites. They provide users with an easy way to navigate your content. To add one to your WordPress website, navigate to their dashboard. Then, from the widget menu, click on Apps. When you’re there, click on Settings in the top right corner. In here, you’ll see a panel at the top that’s filled with menus. The one you want to focus on is the “Connected Apps” menu. Here, you can see the list of all the apps that are connected to your WordPress site. Simply click on the one you want to connect to your app.
