Is It Good SEO to Have Your Website and Blog on Separate WordPress Sites?

A major change that Google announced in September 2018 was the ability to have your website and blog on separate wordpress sites. Previously, if you wanted to do this you had to use WordPress.com or one of the many other CMS platforms that were tied to a single domain. Now, you can use WordPress.com just for your blog, and then create an additional site for your website. This change opens up a lot of opportunities for people who want to do things a little differently than most SEO pros out there, which is awesome!

Why Are You Doing This?

As I mentioned above, this new SEO opportunity is huge. Not only can you have separate sites for your blog and your website, but you can also use your existing CMS for the blog, and then use WordPress.com or another blogging platform for your website.

The advantage to this arrangement is that you can always use your existing CMS to update your blog, even if you decide to switch to a new platform for your website. You don’t have to worry about finding someone who knows how to code HTML and CSS.

How Much Does It Cost To Set Up?

This brings us to the most important question: how much does it cost to set up a WordPress site with a free domain name and hosting?

WordPress.com offers a free basic hosting plan, which gives you a site with limited functionality. If you’re looking for something more advanced, such as free SSL, then you have to upgrade to one of their paid plans.

As a general rule of thumb, I always recommend going with one of their paid plans, as it gives you much more functionality, and it’s the only way to get free SSL. Their free plan only gives you basic HTTPs, which is all you need to run a professional-looking site. As I mentioned above, if you want to do this with a free domain, then you have to use WP.com.

The Disadvantages.

Although this is a fairly powerful and useful tool, there are some disadvantages to having separate blogging and website platforms. Primarily, this requires you to learn new skills, such as HTML and CSS. If you’re looking to hire someone to help you with this, then you’re going to spend a lot of money. Additionally, if you decide to switch platforms, then you’ll have to find a new web designer who is familiar with your old platform.

What If You Don’t Want To Switch?

If you don’t want to switch platforms, then you have to find a way to make your blog and website work together. Thankfully, this is fairly easy to do. What you can do is create a new site, using the same platform as your existing one, and then use a service like Nuwber to connect your two platforms. With this connection, you can keep all of your content, including your email list, and then simply switch the URL to point to the new site. Most people don’t realize this, but you can actually run two separate businesses from one storefront with this method.

Overall What Do You Think?

To wrap up, what do you think about having a separate blogging site and a separate website for a business? Is it a good idea, or should you try to keep everything under one roof?

I think it’s a great idea, especially if you want to keep everything separate. You don’t have to worry about whether or not to blog about something, because you can always create a new blog post. Additionally, you can also use a tool like Hootsuite to connect your social platforms, so when you do post, it will show up on all your social platforms simultaneously.

In a nutshell, having a separate blog and website for your business is a great way to keep things organized, and it gives you the flexibility to evolve your content as your business grows. Plus, it allows you to hire someone to help you build out your site if you’re struggling with web design.
