How to List All Links in a WordPress Website

The number of links on a typical website might be small (less than 15), but the number can quickly grow if you have a more complex site with lots of different blog posts, products, and various other types of content that you want to link to.

Even though the number of hyperlinks is growing, so is the backlash against them. Due to the increased competition of the online world and the rise of content farms, many websites are striving to minimize the amount of links they have inside their site.

Is having lots of links hurting your SEO? Can you really have too many links? In this article, we’ll discuss how to list all the links in your WordPress website so you can get a better understanding of the effect that they are having on your SEO.

Why Are Links Important?

Hyperlinks are incredibly important to SEO, especially high-quality, in-domain links.

Links are important for a number of reasons:

  • They direct users to your content.
  • They indicate to google that your content is valuable.
  • They improve the user experience.
  • They help users navigate your site easily.
  • They boost your SEO.
  • They improve your content’s discoverability.

When a user lands on your site, they want to quickly find the information they’re looking for. If the links on your site are slow to load or difficult to find, then users will have an unpleasant experience while they’re there. Creating more valuable links is a great way to improve the user experience and get more traffic to your site.

How To List All Links On A Website

Whether you’re listing the links on your personal blog or on a corporate website, knowing how many links you have is critical. If you don’t know where to start, this article will help you find the information you need to create a complete list of all the links on your WordPress website.

Start With The Most Important Links

When you’re getting started, it’s a good idea to start with the most important links on your site. These are the links that directly connect to other content or products on your site. For example, let’s say you have a blog post about fashion tips. If that post has a specific product link in it, then that’s the first link a user will see when they visit your site.

It’s a good idea to place these important links near the top of the page. Alternatively, you could put them at the end of the page, but we recommend placing them in the center, as this is usually the most used area of a website.

Use The SEO Tools That Comes With Your Theme

Each WordPress theme has an SEO tool built into its dashboard. These tools let you know about a number of things, such as the domain name of your site, the number of unique words and phrases used on your site, and the overall structure of your site (e.g., whether it’s a straight-forward blog or a complex business site with various sections, etc.).

One of the best things about these tools is that they give you information that’s incredibly useful when it comes to optimizing your site for the search engines.

Create A Master List

Once you’ve started to collect the most important links on your site, it’s a good idea to create a master list of all the links you’ve collected. You can do this by clicking Settings > Writing in your WordPress dashboard. Once you’re in the Writing section of your theme’s dashboard, you can click Bibliography, which will lead you to a page that looks like this:

On this page, you can see a list of all the books, articles, and blog posts that you’ve cited in your content. For example, if I look at the Technology books section, I can see that I’ve cited two books in my blog posts—Shopping with Baby in a Wagon and Designing for Moms: How to Create a Baby-friendly Space in Your Home.

Now, it’s a good idea to go through this list and remove any links that you no longer want to keep. You can find these links by clicking on the trash can next to each item. Once you’ve removed the links you don’t want to keep, you can click Update List at the bottom of the page to have WordPress list all the links on your site again.

Find The Internal Linking

With the list of all the links on your site collected, you can start going through it and identifying the ones that link to other pages on your site. These are the internal linking links, which is a critical part of SEO. Your internal linking links should connect to other relevant content or products that the user might be interested in.

For example, let’s say you’ve got a blog post about fashion tips. If that post has a link to a specific product, then that’s an internal linking link. Now, if that product is something that the user is interested in (e.g., a pair of jeans), then they’re likely to visit your blog post and look at all the other products you’ve linked to in it. This type of back-and-forth linking makes your site more relevant to the user and helps the search engines determine what your site is about.

Avoid Using Too Many Hyphens And Underscores

One of the things that gets flagged by the search engines is sites with numerous hyphens and underscores in the text. These are additional characters that are used to separate words, so if you have a page titled ‘How to Use a Waffle Maker’, you might end up with a lot of ‘how to’s in the page’s text. While it’s acceptable to have some hyphens and underscores for emphasis or to connect letters in a word (e.g., ‘quiet’ becomes ‘qui-et’), having these as the primary separator of words on a page tends to hurt your site’s SEO.

Can You Really Have Too Many Links?

From a purely aesthetic point of view, there’s no question that having lots of links is attractive and adds credibility to your site. However, there’s also a practical point to be made about having too many links on a site—especially on a corporate site. Having too many links on a site can make it harder for users to find the info they’re looking for.

When you have lots of links, it can be difficult for users to navigate your site. If the links are well designed and visually pleasing, it doesn’t hurt the site’s credibility, but from an SEO perspective, having too many links might hurt your site. If a user encounters a problem while on your site (i.e., they can’t find the information they’re looking for or the links don’t work), then your site’s credibility could be called into question. While there’s no definite answer as to how many links are considered ‘too many’, if you’re worried about losing credibility with your audience, then maybe considering removing a few of the less important links from your site.
