Malware Domain Name Copied My Website in WordPress
A few days back, I published an article on my blog about how easy it is for hackers to take over your website by using just your domain name and a couple of keystrokes. The article received a lot of attention, with many people contacting me asking how they can avoid this kind of threat. My answer to most was simply, “Don’t use a.com extension.” This is certainly not something that you want to hear, as you’ll almost certainly agree that.com is one of the most recognizable domain extensions in existence, and certainly the most well-known and popular one among the masses of people that use the internet. Naturally, many will question why you would want to use an extension other than the most popular one, and all will wonder “Why did he use a.wordpress.com website if he’s so worried about it being hacked?” Let’s take a quick look at why this is a problem, and what you can do to prevent it.
The.COM Extension
The reason that using a.com domain name is such a problem is that.com is almost always the default choice for domain extensions, which means that almost every website that is set up with a web host will already be using this extension. When someone types in your domain name in a browser bar, they will almost certainly be directed to a.com website, regardless of whether or not you have a.com domain name or a.org extension or a.net one. That’s a real problem, because if they get locked out of your website, they’re going to have a really hard time finding the information they want. Here’s something else that can make it even more frustrating,.COM is also the default choice for email extensions, so if someone tries to email you from a domain that ends in.com, you’ll automatically get their email delivered to your inbox. That’s a real pain when you’re trying to stay in touch with customers or potential customers, because you don’t always have an opportunity to check your email account frequently. Most people don’t like getting email from domains that they didn’t request information from or didn’t agree to receive notifications from.
The.ORG Extension
If you’re a not-for-profit or non-governmental organization, you can get a.ORG domain name. This extension is also available for some types of businesses, but for the most part it’s only suitable for non-commercial websites. Using a.ORG extension can be just as problematic as using a.COM one, but it at least allows you to block certain types of content or specific words from being indexed by web spiders and search engines. This is helpful if you don’t want your website to be associated with certain topics or if you want to prevent certain words or phrases from being found when people are searching for content related to your industry. For example, if you’re an architecture company and you don’t want your website to be associated with the word “architecture”, or you have a passion for jazz music and don’t want people to find your website by accident while looking for information about computer science, you can block the word “architecture” from being indexed by using a.ORG domain name. The only problem with this option is that some search engines don’t always cooperate, and it can be difficult to know how and when they’re going to honor your request.
The.NET Extension
The.NET extension is a counterpart to the.ORG one, only it’s designed for commercial use. If you have a business that you want to keep track of the money that you’re spending, you can get a.NET domain name. Using a.NET extension also makes it easier for people to find your website through Google and other search engines, as these organizations recognize the commercial value of websites that are well-designed and highly optimized for search engines. A good.NET website will also have key words and phrases listed throughout the content, as well as a H1 tag that contains the name of the business and website, along with a relevant catchphrase or slogan. This will help people find your website easily while also ensuring that you’re listed amongst the top search results whenever somebody searches for your business or product.
The.CO Extension
If you’re a fitness center or professional sports team, you can get a.CO domain name. When somebody types in your domain name in a browser bar, they will be directed to a website that provides information about a wide range of activities, clubs, and training sessions that the center or team offers. If you have a gym or athletic club that you want to promote, you can get a.CO domain name for your website and use it to provide potential members with a ton of useful information about what your facility has to offer. A good.CO website will also contain a blog section where you can post daily or weekly articles about the latest news in your industry, as well as interviews with industry experts or people that work at or are associated with your organization.
The.BIZ Extension
If you’re a manufacturer or retailer of goods or services related to travel, you can get a.BIZ domain name. A.BIZ website is essentially a travel-related business website, with all the content organized around the concept of traveling. If you’re looking to start a boutique hotel or looking to sell travel-related goods, you can get a.BIZ domain name for your website. This is a premium extension that many businesses use, as it’s the most specific of the bunch and can be the key to getting your website indexed by Google and other search engines. The only downside is that.BIZ is one of the most expensive domain extensions, costing thousands of dollars a year.
The.MUSIC Extension
If you’re a professional musician or band, you can get a.MUSIC domain name. MUSIC is the general extension for musicians and it’s been around since the early days of the web, so lots of websites exist that use it. Just like with the other domain extensions mentioned so far, using a.MUSIC domain name makes it easier for people to find your website through search engines. It also provides you with a catchy domain name that will make your friends and family say “aww,” when they hear it. Just remember that the competition is fierce with the.MUSIC domain extension, and you’ll need to have a damn good reason to choose it over the other options available.
The.REC Extension
If you’re a record label or a music management company, you can get a.REC domain name. Like with the other extensions, the.REC domain name is another popular one that is often the default choice for many, so it almost feels redundant to mention that it’s a problem, as surely many of your readers will know what it is and will have used it. Just like with the other extensions mentioned so far, using a.REC domain name makes it easier for people to find your website while also ensuring that you’re ranked high on search results pages whenever somebody searches for your company or product. You’d think that would be easy enough, right? Well, here’s the catch: A lot of people choose a.REC domain name for their website, but they actually use a different extension than what they chose.
The.ENG Extension
If you’re an international business or operation, you can get a.ENG domain name. The.ENG extension is the international version of the.COM one, so you’ll find many websites and blogs across the globe that use it. Because it’s such a popular choice among businesses and individuals around the world, using a.ENG domain name can help establish your international presence and expand your customer base. Just remember that some companies and organizations refuse to do business with companies and individuals in certain countries due to censorship issues, so make sure you’re aware of any potential restrictions before making this decision. As for selecting the extension itself, using.ENG is a great choice as long as you can find a good mix of words that aren’t too similar to the English language. If you don’t want your site to appear in English search results, you can use a different domain extension instead, or translate some of the content on your site into English to make it more accessible to global audiences. Regardless, getting a.ENG domain name is a great way to promote your global reach and establish your brand across the world.
