My Website is Saying It Is Being Redirected Too Many Times and I Don’t Know Why
I’ve been getting a ton of traffic to my website since I launched it. It’s an e-commerce store that sells pet products, grooming supplies, and more. I initially used Google Adsense to monetize the site and I’m making a decent amount of money each month. That being said, I’ve been experiencing some pretty crazy redirect issues since launching the site.
Basically, whenever someone clicks a product link or downloads a PDF, they are being redirected to a different domain. For example, if someone clicks on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale product, they are being redirected to nordstrom.com. Then, when they click on another product, they are being redirected to another domain entirely. It’s pretty crazy.
Why Is It Happening?
As I stated above, I’ve been getting a ton of traffic since launching the website. It was quite surprising to me since I didn’t put in the effort to make my website standout amongst the hundreds of other stores and blogs in my niche. Instead, I went with what I knew and I built the site around the idea of affiliate marketing.
In case you’re curious, here’s a breakdown of how my traffic sources are performing. (Note: All numbers are approximations. They aren’t exact.)
I started out simply using Google Adsense to monetize the site. I only put in the effort to optimize my site for organic search. I never paid for traffic and I’ve been doing a lot of organic SEO on my own time since I launched the site. That being said, I didn’t expect my organic search traffic to completely take over my site. It still only makes up about 30% of my total visitors.
For a long time, I thought that my site was just falling into a pattern of getting redirected to different domains whenever someone clicked a product link or downloaded a PDF. I didn’t link to other sites often because I assumed that my site was doing the linking for me. However, when I checked my site’s source code and behavior in Google Analytics, I found that my site was actually performing the redirection.
Other Redirects
When someone clicks on a product in my site’s store, they are being redirected to other sites to purchase the item. For example, if someone clicks on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale product, they are being redirected to nordstrom.com. Then, when they click on another product, they are being redirected to another domain. This is extremely frustrating because I’m not making money off these clicks and I have to track down each person who is being redirected and start over from scratch again.
I believe the root of the problem is that I didn’t build my site for mobile users. Whenever someone clicks on a product in my store, they expect to see the product listed. However, when they visit my site on their phone, the layout is completely different and it looks like a jumbled mess. My site can’t handle being viewed on a small screen the way that it handles being viewed on a large screen. If I could just fix this, I think that most of my problems would be solved.
Final Takeaway
If you’re experienced with websites and you’ve built a few dozen or hundreds of blogs, you may be wondering how to tackle the problem that I’m facing. Basically, whenever someone clicks on a product in my site, they are being redirected to another site.
