What’s a Header in a WordPress Website?

A header is the area that appears at the top of a webpage. It serves as an introduction to the content that follows. You’ll often see a header with a blog’s name or web address at the top, with the masthead (banner) as an example.

On the other hand, a footer is the area that appears at the bottom of a webpage. It traditionally contains copyright information as well as social media buttons (like Twitter™ or Facebook™).

Difference Between The Two

Although they appear similar, a header and footer serve completely different purposes. A header usually appears at the top of a webpage, while a footer appears at the bottom. This is more of a visual distinction than anything else; the content of the footer will always be displayed below the header, regardless of the order in which they appear. For example, if you have a blog post and want to include a social media share button, you’ll need to place it in the footer.

On the other hand, the header area is more of a “catch-all” for information that doesn’t fit in the other areas of the page. This could include a logo, a website title, or a description of the content that follows. If you have a limited amount of space for displaying text, the header is the best option since it gives you more room for other elements. You should place your call-to-action (CTA) buttons in the header as well since this is the area that will be viewed first.

Types Of Headers

There are many different types of headers that you can create. You have the traditional blog layout with the header appearing above the content in a full-width website or a landing page. Or, you could choose to have the header appear below the content in a list-based format like a newspaper or magazine.

The look and feel of your website will determine which one you want to use. If you’re creating a business website, you might not want to use a headline type of header since it will make your content appear less important. Instead, you could choose to use a smaller header in the form of a tool-tip or a strip at the top of a blog post. You might also want to avoid using an image-based header since people are already more likely to click on images than they are text.

The size and placement of your header also determine what elements you want to include. If you have a limited amount of space, you might decide to go for a smaller header that will fit entirely within the area you have available. Alternatively, you could choose to have your header span the entire page width.

As for the location, you have the freedom to put your header in any part of the page you want. But, if you want to increase the chance of somebody clicking on it, you could place it at the top or near the top of the page.

Whether you have a blog or a newspaper style website, the header is a crucial part of the user experience. It gives the user an idea of what to expect and helps them determine whether or not they want to continue reading. You can use headers to your advantage by identifying the various types of blog posts and uses that you have for headers.
