How to Change Your Website URL on WordPress

You can easily change the URL of your WordPress website to anything you want. Normally, the WordPress URL is in the form of https://yourblog.com (or.org) which is pretty self-explanatory. But what you might not know is that you can use a free online tool like Bitly to create custom branded URLs that also allow you to track the clicks on those links.

Bitly URL Builder

It’s always nice when a tool does a lot of the work for you, especially when you are creating a new website or blog for the first time. The Bitly URL Builder is a free online tool that makes it easy to build hyperlinks (the backlinks to your website) for your social media accounts. It also generates short and long custom URLs that you can then connect to your social media accounts and websites. All you need to do is enter your email address and a nick name for your new blog (you can find more information at blog.bitly.com). After that, it’s just a matter of entering the bitly short link into the email field of your social media accounts and websites. You’ll then be able to track the clicks from people who are finding their way to your website because of the link.

This tool is especially useful for non-profits, brands, and bloggers who are looking to increase their social media presence. If you find this tool helpful, please consider making a small donation to support the continued development of this free product.

Redirecting Your Old Domain

If your old domain was registered with a free email service like Google Apps or Yahoo! Mail (the two most popular free email services) then you can use the WP Redirect plugin to easily redirect all of the traffic from your old domain to your new one. With this plugin, changing the domain of your website is as easy as clicking a few buttons. You’ll then need to set up some redirect rules on your existing web host to make sure that all of the traffic is redirected to the new site.

This plugin automatically looks for existing pages on your old domain and creates 301 redirects to bring all of the old traffic to your new site. It also handles all of the redirects for you so you don’t have to worry about doing any technical searching for defunct pages or the like. Simply install the plugin, point it to your old domain, and you’ll be able to start benefiting from this simple solution right away.

Using Cloudflare’s CDN For Speedy Page Loads

Cloudflare is a global content delivery network (CDN) that provides a free service for website owners to get fast and stable page loads, regardless of the device they are using. One of the things that makes Cloudflare special is that it automatically caches the content that you put out there so that if someone visits your site shortly after publishing a new article, they’ll see that content without having to wait for a server to respond. (This content delivery network is so valuable that Google has actually integrated it directly into the core of their GOOGLE platform.)

When you use Cloudflare’s free service, they will cache the content that you put out there at blazing fast speeds. It’s a great solution for any website that is either very busy or simply wants to improve its performance. If you’re interested in trying out Cloudflare’s content delivery network, simply follow these steps:

  • Go to Cloudflare’s website and click on the Get Started button.
  • Enter your email address and create a password that will be used to access your account.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the set-up process. (You don’t need to create an account. Simply using your email address and password will suffice)
  • Go back to Cloudflare’s website and click on the GET STARTED button to confirm your setup.
  • Go to your WordPress Dashboard and click on the Cloudflare icon (it looks like a tiny bolt) at the top of the page.
  • You’ll now see a short message from Cloudflare confirming your setup. You can now begin using their services.
