How to Create a Password Protected WordPress Website

If you have got a WordPress website and are looking for ways to protect the security of your content, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will teach you the steps for creating a password protected WordPress site.

Secure Your WordPress Installation

The first step to creating a password protected site is to secure your WordPress installation. To do this, you need to access the WordPress dashboard and click the Settings button in the top right corner.

You then need to visit the “General Settings” tab and change the “Admin Password” to a secure password that is at least 8 characters long. It is also advisable to change the Admin Password on the Site Options tab as well.

Next, go to the Security tab and ensure the “Security” box is checked. Finally, you need to make sure the “Change Password” box is checked on the Login tab.

Once you have changed these settings, click the blue “Save Changes” button in the top right corner.

Create Your Strong Password

Now that your WordPress installation is secure, it’s time to create your strong password. To do this, visit the Settings menu again and click the “Password” option.

Type a password that is at least eight characters long and contain letters, numbers, and spaces.

Do not use any of the following words as your password:

  • 123456
  • password
  • iloveyou
  • letmein
  • dragonball

These words are commonly used as passwords and can be easily guessed by hackers. So, instead of using these words as your password, use a random phrase, a famous saying, or a beautiful expression to name just a few.

Once you have created this strong password, click the blue “Save Changes” button in the top right corner to save it.

Set Up Your Login

Now that you have a strong password, you need to set up your login. To do this, click the Settings button in the top right corner of the WordPress dashboard again and visit the “Login” section.

You will need to create a username for the site (this should be a unique name). Then, for the Password field, use the strong password you created earlier. Finally, hit the “Save Changes” button in the top right corner to save your settings.

Now, whenever someone wants to log into your site, they will need to enter the strong password you created earlier. So, make sure you write it down in a safe place and keep it somewhere easy to remember (ideally in a safe!).

Change The WordPress Theme

The next step to creating a password protected site is to change the WordPress theme. To do this, click the Settings button in the top right corner of the WordPress dashboard, then select the “Appearance” option and choose one of the pre-built themes from the drop-down menu.

Once you have chosen a theme, click the “Click here to activate the theme” button to activate it.

Once your theme is activated, you will see a small box with the activation message. Just below this box, you will see a orange button with the text “Hello World!”. This is the WordPress dashboard. If you want to edit the content of the page, click this orange button to enter the WordPress dashboard. This is where you can insert text and images just like any other webpage.

Set Up Your Homepage

To create a professional-looking website, you must have a sophisticated homepage. To do this, click the Settings button in the top right corner of the WordPress dashboard, then select the “Reading” option and choose one of the pre-built homepages from the drop-down menu.

Once you have chosen a home page, click the “Click here to activate the theme” button to activate it.

Now, to make your homepage stand out, you will need to add some text and images to it. For this, you will need to insert some shortcodes into the text on your homepage in the same way you would insert images into a post.

You can also add a small heading above the fold to give it some prominence. To do this, navigate to the homepage from the dashboard and click the “Writing” option in the top right corner.

Then, click the “Insert Shortcode” tab at the top of the page.

Now, whenever you want to add a shortcode to your homepage text, enter the corresponding shortcode [name]: followed by the text you would like to appear.

For example, [name]: My Awesome Website might become

My Awesome Website

if you enter it like so.

If you want to add an image to your homepage, click the “Insert Image” tab.

Find an image on your computer and click the “Choose File” button to select it.

Once you have selected the image, click “Insert Into Post” to insert it into the current post.

If you want to add a video, click the “Insert Video” tab and browse to the location of the video on your computer. Once it plays, click the “Set As Featured Video” button to make it the current featured video on your website. You can add as many videos as you want to your homepage to increase the chances of a viewer landing on your site.

Customize Your 404 Error Page

Finally, you need to customize the 404 Error page.

To do this, click the Settings button in the top right corner of the WordPress dashboard and select the “404 Error” option.

Then, enter the URL you would like the 404 error to point to in the “Permalink” field and hit the “Save Changes” button to save the settings.

Now, whenever someone goes to a URL that does not exist, they will see the customized 404 error page you created rather than the standard WordPress 404 error page.

That’s All!

With only a couple of clicks, you have secured your WordPress installation and customized the 404 error page.

Now, whenever someone visits one of your websites and enters an incorrect password, they will see this error message:

“We’re sorry, but the password you entered is incorrect.”

Rather than seeing a blank screen with the WordPress login, they will see a message indicating their login attempt has failed.

Instead of being sent to a different page, they will be taken to a special 404 page where they can’t get in because the password is incorrect. So, in essence, what happens is that the user is automatically locked out of their own website.

Therefore, to log in to your website, you must first verify that they are a valid user by sending them an email with a link to activate their account or use the Reset Password feature. Once they have logged in, they can then change their password and be able to use all features on your site without having to remember a complicated master password.

Also, make sure to change the admin password on your Site Options menu as soon as possible after setting this up. Doing this is not only good practice, but will make it much easier to verify login details should the need arise.
